Using History in Poetry

The distant past offers poets the opportunity to surprise readers with a range of vanished imagery and ideas, weird stories and lost words. Contemporary poets on both sides of the Atlantic have also drawn on historical subject matter as a means of approaching present concerns from a fresh angle. Throughout this course, we’ll look at the different strategies employed by modern poems in which history becomes strangely alive. In a variety of assignments, you will energise language with words, events and speakers from previous centuries.
