Nature Cure: Pastoral Poems for Urban Dwellers

“We constantly refer back to the natural world to try and discover who we are. Nature is the most potent source of metaphors to describe and explain our behaviour and feelings.” This quote from Richard Mabey’s book Nature Cure provides the starting point for this writing workshop, which investigates the emotional power of the natural world. We will examine poems by William Wordsworth, John Clare, Alice Oswald, Robinson Jeffers, Sarah Maguire and Wallace Stevens and prose from Mabey; while considering the role of the poet as a spokesperson for nature, as well as the place of nature in the city and in a world of increasing ecological peril. Exercises and discussion will act as a prompt to produce new work during the session; some of this workshop will take place outdoors if weather permits.
